If there is one thing Alaska has it”s bear tales by the thousands, and these pictures alone are worth a thousand words. Imagine coming back to your plane after a fishing trip in the Alaskan wilderness, just to find out it has been torn to shreds by a hungry bear trying to get to a cooler left inside the plane. What would you do? How would you get back home? What one pilot in that situation did is just genius.
During a private fly-in fishing excursion in the Alaskan wilderness, the chartered pilot and passengers left a cooler and fish bait in the plane while they went off fishing.
This is what was waiting for them once they got back, a destroyed plane.
While they were gone a bear had smelled the food and torn through the side of the plane to get to the cooler.
The bear even slashed the tires…what a jerk.
What the pilot did next was ingenious. He used his radio to contact another pilot to bring him 2 new tires, 3 cases of duct tape, and some sheet plastic.
Using the duct tape he patched the plane together and flew it home like nothing had happened.
Incidentally, the Discovery Channel”s “MythBusters” did a whole episode on duct tape not that long ago where they patched a plane together using nothing but duct tape… and it worked wonders for them, too. So I guess the lesson here is never leave the house without some duct tape, or a #2 Phillips screwdriver…and a good pocket knife. Oh and some WD-40.
