About a week ago, five dogs were rescued from a terribly neglectful household in Las Vegas, New Mexico. They were all left outdoors, tethered to chains and severely malnourished.
One of these poor pooches went into the care of NMDOG, where he was named Hubble. Immediately, everyone involved with his rescue knew that this bull terrier’s situation was particularly terrifying.
He weighed a scant 26 pounds, and could hardly hold his head up on his own, let alone stand.
To put it into perspective, average male bull terriers weigh between 49 and 84 pounds. In other words, even 12 more hours without medical intervention could have killed this pup.
He had severely infected lesions all over his body, most horrifyingly in the groin area.
I will spare you the photos here, as they’re incredibly graphic, but his groin was swollen with maggots, which had made a home in his infected lesions. They were devouring him from the inside. Even after multiple times flushing the wounds, more maggots kept appearing.
Hubble was so weak upon arrival, it seemed he might have lost the will to live.
Every inch of the poor dog had a health problem to tend to.
Members of NMDOG knew that the choice between life and death was ultimately up to Hubble.
If he didn’t have a fighting spirit in him, no amount of medical intervention would be able to save him. One of his caretakers took his head into her lap and let him know that they would be there to fight for him, but only if he was ready to take on that battle.
She told him that if he wasn’t ready to undergo such an immense feat, they’d understand.
But he wasn’t going to give up…
One of the most urgent issues to address was his severe anemia.
He responded well to an emergency blood transfusion, and even accepted a small offering of food, which he had turned his head on before.
His liver and kidneys were functioning near-normally, and soon Hubble was lifting his head up all on his own.
NMDOG took this as his way of saying, “I want to beat this.”
He was even able to take a little stroll outside in the fresh air for a bit.
But he is nowhere near the end of his journey.
Yesterday, Hubble underwent a very risky surgical procedure.
Any surgery in his frail state has it’s own hazards, but the doctors agreed that it was critical to remove the infected lesions.
He rested up before the big day…
And yesterday, he came out of it very successfully! He’ll be recovering slowly.
Now that this major obstruction is behind him, there are many more to come. However, NMDOG is committed to being there every step of the way.
Keep fighting, Hubble!

This dog is a fighter, and I have faith that he’ll be able to climb the steep slope ahead of him. As you can imagine, his treatment will be and already has been incredibly expensive. Please, please consider donating via his crowdsourcing page. He deserves this chance at life! He’s come so far already.
