Soldiers have a tough job, that goes without saying. Theirs is a job that”s changed over the years, almost as much as its stayed the same. Which is exactly what British photographer Thom Atkinson explored for his series “Soldiers Inventories.”

These 13 pictures of British soldiers” gear from the last 1000 years paint a heroic picture of the men and women who defend their country. I can”t believe just how much stuff soldiers had to carry. How was that even possible?
