7 Small Changes that Make a Big Difference in Your Goals

Do you want to achieve something great with your life? Is there something missing from your world right now that could be there? What type of legacy would you like to leave, long after you’re gone?

That just got real, let’s dial it back a bit… What would your life look like if you were as happy and fulfilled as you can imagine? How would you spend your days if you were truly free?

I like to paint this vivid picture for myself when I write down my goals. It takes a lot of desire and motivation to achieve your loftiest aims. The lack thereof is one reason less than 10% of people meet their New Year’s Resolutions. But it takes more than that; it takes the seven keys that we’ll talk about right now.

Recognize the Resistance

First off, kudos to anyone who earnestly attempts a goal. Many people don’t set goals at all because they’re afraid of failure, or they’ve convinced themselves they’re perfectly happy as is. The latter is probably the biggest reason that people’s dreams wither and their lives stagnate. It’s the dead-end, cul-de-sac at the intersection of “fine” and “good enough.”

Understandably, they would avoid a possible letdown, because most people have a long past of not getting what they desire. Defeated and discouraged, they fall into the fixed mindset trap, where positive change and improvement is considered futile. They’re taught through hardship that what they desire and the resources to get it are scarce.

News and social media don’t help, either – they’re too busy profiting off a cycle of pessimism, negativity, and envy. To make matters worse, we live in a culture that expects everything to be quick and easy. That’s why our society loves diet pills, Botox, payday loans, and delivery apps.

Get Your Mind Right

So how do you counter all this resistance? Start by crushing your toxic, self-limiting beliefs like these. Say to yourself “I can’t do/achieve x goal because I’m not y.” Write down all your doubts (I’m not smart enough, rich enough, connected enough, etc.) Now write down a counterexample for each negative belief.

Go back to your past victories and relieve your success, think about what you did right, and how you can apply those lessons in the future. Conversely, look at situations where what you wanted didn’t happen. Learn from the experience, but don’t dwell on it, and resolve to adjust your behavior.

Another great thing to do is make gratitude a daily practice in your life. Gratefulness provides the perspective that you have something to gain from every situation, good or bad. Have compassion for yourself, and realize that attempting something new and difficult is admirable and builds your character. Let go of perfectionism, and strive to just act and accept what happens – this always trumps inaction.

Proper Goal Setting

Let’s say a person sets a goal and doesn’t achieve it. The issue tends to be that the goal wasn’t set properly. Most people focus on outward goals, like earning more money or losing weight. The problem is they can’t answer why the goal is important to them personally.

Do they want to lose weight because they’ll be healthier and thus, more active with their kids or grandkids? Or is it because society deems a slim waist important? Do they want to make more money so that they can achieve financial freedom, travel, and only do work that’s meaningful? Or is it because they think wealth conveys importance? The point is that whatever your goals are, they must be tied to a deep emotional motivator that’s unique to you.

Second, our goals must be specific, so that we can quantify them and measure progress. This is the first and most important element of a proper goal (I explain the elements in-depth here). TLDR – use SMART goals; Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Based. Set deadlines for all your goals in 5-year, 1-year goals, and 3-month intervals.

Only pick a few goals at most. I assume you have a day job, perhaps a family, and many responsibilities. So, it’s key to narrow your focus and not get sidetracked.

Focus on the 20%

Pareto principle is an observation that around 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. When applied to your goals, ask yourself: which 20% of activities will generate 80% of the results? As Tim Ferriss asks in Tribe of Mentors, “What would it look like if this [goal] were easy?” For weight loss, 20% would probably be cutting sugar and snacks. In sales or a job hunt, it’s finding leads.

For any goal, start by framing the problem with a few focus questions like 1) Which activity will move the needle the most? 2) Which is a waste of energy? 3) Where does the greatest long-term impact come from? Once you begin acting, perform daily, weekly, and quarterly progress reviews. Determine if you need to adjust your approach, reset your expectations, or change goals altogether.

Turn Goals into Habits

Let’s say you’ve narrowed down your projects and the critical actions to take. Write down the 5 things that you need to accomplish today at all costs. Most of these will be recurring in nature, and thus become habits. An aspiring novelist might make it a habit to write 300 words per day. A developer might write some numbers of lines of code each day.

Someone trying to lose weight may meal prep twice a week, or work out for thirty minutes per day. Someone looking for a relationship or to make friends might go to a social event once a week, join a club, or spend an hour on a dating app. Build these habits into your daily schedule and block out that time. Treat it sacred, letting nothing get in the way.

It takes on average 66 days to form a habit – put yourself on probation until then. Audit your week and hold yourself accountable to the habit. Build in rewards along the way to reinforce the habit. You might treat yourself to a latte after finishing a chapter, or dine out after a week of strict dieting. Find whatever your ‘carrot’ is, even if it’s eating anything but a gross carrot. Use these rewards to link progress with pleasure in your mind.

Action Beats Perfection

Let’s talk about a huge pitfall that nearly everyone is a victim to at some point, and pardon the rant. All the advice you receive, every article you read and learn from is useless without action. If you’ve been reading self-help for a while, and maybe you’ve even attended a seminar or two – you’ve learned what you need to know, the class is dismissed.

Don’t become a self-improvement hobbyist, don’t go for your personal-development Ph. D., there won’t be a thesis paper. If you watched the ‘How To’ video on YouTube, you probably know enough to get started. So instead of procrastinating on your life goals, until you have the ‘perfect’ plan, get started immediately.

Don’t give yourself time to hesitate, period. Follow Mel Robbin’s “5 Second Rule” and ride the wave of excitement and intention. Do the thing you need to do, long before fear and anxiety creep in. When you’re attempting something new and scary, like getting up to speak or asking someone out, take time out of the equation… Don’t overthink it, follow Nike’s slogan, and just do that shit. I heard it put best recently, “Never leave the scene of clarity without taking decisive action.”

Build Your Team

One of the biggest myths in the self-improvement world is that of the successful genius that did it all herself. Movies glamorize this idea of some lone wolf that goes from rags-to-riches by their bootstraps. Or, the motivational YouTube videos that show a guy in a dark room just contemplating life by himself.

Look, if your environment is all negative, focusing on yourself, by yourself is a good start. Still, no one achieves success all by himself. Jobs had Wozniak and Jordan had Pippen.  Those who have accomplished so much have people around them who clearly have helped.

Build a team around you that can support you and uplift you. There are many groups out there for this purpose: online communities, exercise groups, masterminds, coaching, and mentoring circles, accountability groups, close friendships, and so on. If there was one “hidden secret” to success (a great click-bait title by the way), this is it. These groups can dramatically speed up your progress, and the journey is more fun when you take it together.

What Is Authentication & Why Is It Important?

How to stay safe online remains a catch-22. Every 39 seconds, a hacker strikes, contributing to the dark web’s current catalogue of 15 billion stolen user credentials for sale. With every purchase, more e-users fall victim to identity theft. Multi-step security features, such as biometric and out-of-band voice authentication, are common tactics to strengthen online security.

However, more security factors don’t quite correspond to having more security. Think of authentication as identification checkpoints – walking through TSA, if you will. Authentication methods simply add rigor to your sign-in process. By no means do authentication methods further encrypt your data.

While it’s unarguable that authentication methods minimize a user’s risk of identity theft, it’s also unarguable they come with a fleet of flaws. 81% of security incidents were tied to stolen or weak passwords in 2018. To paint a numerical visual, there were 157,525 security incidents (and 3,950 confirmed data breaches) in 2019 alone. For that reason and many more, it’s time for a better approach to authentication. Already universally trusted, asymmetric cryptography has a solution.

Common Authentication Methods For Security & Convenience

Customarily, tech users are provided the following authentication feature options:

  • passwords and security questions,
  • out-of-band voice,
  • time-based, one-time passwords, and
  • biometrics

Still, not all authentication is equal. Specifically, passwords and security questions are very weak – but you already knew that. In 2014, Bill Gates predicted, “There is no doubt that over time, people are going to rely less and less on passwords.”

Perhaps the reliance on “shared secrets” is the reason the tech economy is turning away from passwords and security questions today. Shared secrets are only known by the user and are stored by the service provider. However, shared secrets leave users stuck and make the responsibility for protecting and remembering multiple passwords a nightmare.

Out-of-band voice is a stronger approach, but not by much. This technique confirms the user’s identity by calling the phone number registered to the account. Out-of-band voice is weak for countless reasons – primarily because it requires users to have a second device and be available to answer a call (i.e. active phone service, appropriate environment). However, the answered call cannot correlate to effective authentication. Voice calls are easily intercepted by – or redirected to – hackers.

Moving up the authentication, time-based, one-time passwords provided medium security. This works exactly how it sounds: a one-time code is sent to the user via text, push notification, or email. This provides sufficient security – enough to present hackers with obstacles – but is still vulnerable to SIM hijacking, malware, and notification flooding attacks.

Atop all is biometric security, providing strong security and being extremely hard to fake. The biggest con to biometric security is its technology often has issues with false positives. For example, holding facial recognition software up to a sleeping user, or using a twin to fool the system. Apart from that, biometric security is immensely durable.

In fact, it rids the need for password remembrance and extra steps for users. However if compromised, people can’t simply change their fingerprints or face – making it a high-value target for attack. Note: biometrics are only secure if data is stored locally and protected by TMP/Enclave.

What Is Two-Step Authentication & Is It Strong?

Two-step authentication is a legendary cyberterm that has grown recognizable to household users. Requiring two or more authentication methods to log in, its strength of security depends on the weakest factor used. Most commonly, users pair passwords and a one-time code to create two-step authentication; but remember, neither passwords or one-time codes are strong authentication methods. Saying this, the strength of two-step authentication is variably undeemable, which creates unpredictable hacking outcomes.

Here’s an example:

In July 2020, hackers took over the verified Twitter accounts of several entrepreneurial, celebrity and business figures across the globe. Targets included: Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Warren Buffet, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and even Michael Bloomberg. On their accounts, the hackers began suggesting followers to send them bitcoin, offering to double the value sent if they did so.

The tweet from Elon Musk’s account read, “I’m feeling generous because of Covid-19. I’ll double any BIC payment sent to my BIC address for the next hour. Good luck, and stay safe out there!” In the investigation, it was found that many of the compromised accounts used multi-factor authentication; however, hackers were unable to obtain the one-time codes sent out.

Again, more authentication doesn’t mean more security. In fact, multi-factor authentication creates more headaches for users, causing them to quickly act before one-time codes expire, jump between devices, and remember various passwords. On top of that, SMS authentication codes are encrypted and can be easily intercepted, and encrypted instant messaging apps may send to multiple devices at once.

As predicted by Bill Gates, asymmetric cryptographic (leveraged by certificates) is ending the need for passwords. This way, we can have immensely secure authentication that is easier and more convenient for everyone to use. Do you know how asymmetric cryptography works? How well are your accounts secured?

10 Things Not to Say to Someone with Breast (Or Any Other) Cancer

Welcome to October. The leaves are showing their vibrant fall colors. Pumpkin spice everything can be found everywhere, and Breast Cancer Awareness Month is underway.
Learning that a friend, family member, or coworker has breast (or any other) cancer is hard. Figuring out what to say next is harder. As a two-time cancer survivor, I know that there are plenty of things not to say to a cancer patient because I’ve heard most of them.

I’ve written my experiences and learnings down in my book Again: Surviving Cancer Twice With Love And Lists and I will share with you here important questions, phrases, or topics to avoid.

At least you have a good cancer.

No cancer is a “good” cancer. This is a backhanded way of asking about the patient’s prognosis. Rather than asking for such information, let the individual know that you’re there to listen and let her share what she’s comfortable sharing.

Cancer isn’t as hard as it used to be.

When I was fourteen years old in 1981 with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, cancer was really hard, especially when I threw up day after day from radiation treatment and couldn’t go to high school. Thirty-five years later when I was forty-nine—a wife, mom of three, and professional—with breast cancer, cancer still was really hard, especially after I lost my hair, had agonizing bone pain, and diarrhea during months of chemotherapy. While advances in cancer treatment have improved over the years, any treatment stinks. It’s okay to say, “This really sucks.” Because it does and thanks for noticing.

Are you getting the boob job with the tummy tuck?

A lumpectomy or a single or bilateral mastectomy is not a “boob job.” It’s the amputation of some or all of the breast tissue, possibly including nipples, and often resulting in the complete loss of sensation in the chest. Reconstruction, if chosen, may be done with implants or with some form of flap reconstruction where the surgeon may use tissue from other body parts to reconstruct the breasts. These are painful surgeries with fairly long recoveries and leave individuals profoundly changed in their self-identities and in their sex lives. So, not a tummy tuck.

Does it run in your family? Maybe you should have worked out more.

No one asks for a cancer diagnosis. It’s not anyone’s fault if they get one. Please leave the “should have” lectures at home and avoid attributing an individual’s cancer diagnosis to something they may or may not have done, such as the food they ate, their exercise habits, or family history.

My mother, sister, friend, grandma . . . had cancer. She died.

Individuals’ cancer experiences and outcomes are different, and these stories may not always be helpful or comforting, particularly if death is involved. Put yourself in the patient’s shoes, would you want someone to say that to you?

Have you heard about [this new treatment, supplement, anti-cancer diet]?

When I was in treatment, I received much unsolicited advice. I had a great team of medical professionals whom I trusted, and I didn’t want to hear about the latest Internet “cures,” ginger chews for nausea, or turmeric tea’s anti-inflammatory properties. Respect the patient – and her choices.

I Know How You Feel.

No, you don’t. But, you can ask her how she’s feeling.

You’re so brave, strong, an inspiration . . .

While not unkind, these expressions discount how individuals with cancer may feel, which, more often than not, may be sad, angry, terrified, and anxious.

You look great.

Cancer may come with hair loss, weight loss or gain, changes in skin tone, etc. Trust me, the patient knows she doesn’t look great and is probably upset about it. Instead, simply tell the individual how great it is to see her.

Nothing.

If you’re not sure what to say, then say so. Don’t ghost your friend, family member, or coworker due to your fear or unease. It’s about her, not you.

So what can you do?

Remember that the person with whom you’re speaking is the same person she always has been. Listen or offer words of encouragement and support. Ask what you can do to help them in practical, concrete ways, such as making meals, taking them to appointments, or picking up children from school. Finally, talk to them about something, anything, other than cancer.
